No. But it will replace developers who don’t evolve.
Recently, I received a simple but loaded question on our Facebook Page:
“What’s the future of Business Central developers with all this Copilot and autonomous agent stuff?”
And let me tell you – it’s the question everyone is thinking, even if they’re not saying it out loud.
So here’s my answer – unfiltered.
☠️ The “Boilerplate Dev” is on Borrowed Time
Copilot in Business Central can already do quite a bit:
- Auto-generate AL code
- Suggest table extensions and fields
- Help write APIs
- Pull metadata for reports
- Simplify invoice and order creation
If your day still revolves around “copying standard tables, tweaking fields, and pushing F5,” let’s just say… the future is not in your favor.
But don’t panic – evolve.
🧠 AI Writes Code. You Write Logic.
Copilot doesn’t understand the business nuances. You do.
AI can generate a report layout. But it won’t know:
- Why a specific posting group triggers reconciliation issues
- When to use a flowfield vs. a lookup
- How a VAT rule changes across borders
- What the service department really meant in their customization request
The future dev isn’t a code monkey.
They’re a business-aware solution architect with a technical edge.
🧭 The Role is Shifting – Radically
Here’s what tomorrow’s BC developer looks like:
🔹 Less coding, more problem-solving
🔹 Designing plug-and-play Copilot agents
🔹 Collaborating deeply with functional consultants
🔹 Thinking like a strategist, not just a developer
🔹 Automating low-value work before someone else does it for them
We’re seeing this shift already – even in our own team at DynaExperts.
Where we used to spend time scaffolding objects, we now spend time refining the user experience and business outcome.

- Can I explain the business value of my code?
- Am I using AI tools to accelerate delivery?
- Do I know the workflows and the tech?
- Am I thinking architecture and scale – or just compiling AL?
If you’re leaning toward “yes,” then you’re not replaceable – you’re essential.

Copilot won’t replace you.
But it will replace the version of you that refuses to grow.
The ones who survive this shift won’t be the fastest typers – they’ll be the sharpest thinkers.
The ones who know how to command the Copilot, not fear it.
